Use of medications to stimulate ovulation in women who do not ovulate regularly.

Ovulation Induction (OI)

Ovulation induction is a treatment used to stimulate ovulation in women who have irregular ovulation or do not ovulate regularly. It is commonly recommended for women whose menstrual cycles are irregular or unpredictable, making it difficult to determine the fertile period.

The main aim of ovulation induction is to stimulate the ovaries to develop and release mature eggs by using specific medications that regulate hormonal activity.

Procedure of Ovulation Induction

In this method, oral or injectable hormonal medications are given to stimulate the ovaries. These medicines act in place of the body’s natural hormonal signals and help in:

  • Stimulating the growth of ovarian follicles (which contain eggs)

  • Promoting the maturation of eggs

  • Preparing the uterine lining (endometrium) for possible implantation

During treatment, doctors carefully monitor the response of the ovaries.

Cycle Monitoring

Ovulation induction cycles are closely monitored using pelvic ultrasound examinations. Monitoring helps to evaluate:

  • Number and size of developing follicles

  • Thickness of the endometrium (uterine lining)

  • Timing of ovulation

Based on this monitoring, the doctor identifies the fertile window. Couples are usually advised to have timed intercourse during this period to increase the chances of pregnancy.

In some cases, ovulation induction may be combined with intrauterine insemination (IUI) to improve the chances of fertilization.

Who May Benefit from Ovulation Induction?

Ovulation induction may be recommended for women who have hormonal or reproductive conditions that affect ovulation, such as:

  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

  • Hypopituitarism

  • Endometriosis

  • Irregular menstrual cycles

  • Hormonal imbalance affecting ovulation

Advantages of Ovulation Induction
  • Helps regulate ovulation

  • Increases the frequency of fertile periods

  • Non-surgical and minimally invasive treatment

  • Can be combined with other fertility treatments such as IUI

Ovulation induction is widely used in fertility management and, when performed under proper medical supervision and monitoring, it is considered a safe and effective method to support conception.
