Uterine Prolapse Surgery

A procedure to restore the uterus to its normal position when it descends due to weakened pelvic muscles.

Uterine Prolapse Surgery

Uterine prolapse is a condition in which the uterus slips down from its normal position into or outside the vagina. This occurs when the pelvic floor muscles and supporting tissues become weak or stretched, commonly due to childbirth, aging, or previous surgery. In some cases, more than one pelvic organ may prolapse.

Symptoms of Pelvic Organ Prolapse

Uterine prolapse can affect normal daily activities and reproductive health. Common symptoms include:

  • A feeling of heaviness or pressure in the pelvis

  • Pain or discomfort during intercourse

  • Vaginal spotting or bleeding

  • Involuntary leakage of urine (urinary incontinence)

  • Constipation

Causes of Uterine Prolapse

The condition may develop due to:

  • Weakening of pelvic muscles after childbirth

  • Obesity

  • Chronic cough

  • Long-term constipation

  • Pelvic organ tumors

Treatment & Surgical Options

Uterine prolapse surgery is performed to restore the normal position of the uterus and strengthen pelvic support structures. Depending on the patient’s age, severity of prolapse, and future pregnancy plans, treatment options include:

  • Uterus-preserving surgery: Repair and support of the uterus

  • Hysterectomy: Removal of the uterus in severe cases

The choice of treatment is individualized and requires proper evaluation by a specialist.
