Postpartum Care
Care given to a mother after delivery to support physical recovery and manage post-birth changes.

Postpartum Care
While your newborn becomes your priority, postpartum care is equally important for a mother’s recovery. After delivery, the body undergoes several physical and emotional changes that require proper care and attention.
What to Expect After Delivery
Pregnancy brings many changes to the body, and recovery continues even after childbirth. Understanding these changes can help in a smoother recovery.
Vaginal Soreness
If you had a vaginal tear or an incision (episiotomy) during delivery, the area may remain sore for a few weeks. Larger tears may take longer to heal.
To ease discomfort:
Apply an ice pack or use chilled pads to the affected area
Use a squeeze bottle with warm water while passing urine
Sit in a warm water bath (sitz bath) for a few minutes
Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain relief if advised
Consult your doctor about numbing sprays or creams
Use stool softeners if needed to avoid constipation
Seek medical advice if pain is severe or persistent
Vaginal Discharge
After delivery, the body sheds the lining of the uterus, resulting in vaginal discharge (lochia).
Initially, the discharge is red and heavy
Gradually, it becomes lighter and changes from pinkish-brown to yellowish-white
Contact your doctor if you experience heavy bleeding (soaking a pad within an hour), especially if associated with fever, pelvic pain, or tenderness.
Postpartum Contractions
You may experience mild contractions, known as afterpains, in the first few days after delivery. These help the uterus return to its normal size and reduce bleeding.
Often feel like menstrual cramps
More noticeable during breastfeeding due to hormone release
Pain relief may be used if required
Proper postpartum care helps in faster recovery and reduces the risk of complications. Always consult your doctor if you notice any unusual symptoms.
